Additional Comments
:
It is hand woven from fresh palm leafs.
The life span of palm leaf thatch is approximately 3-6 years in wet humid climates, and 3-6 years in warm dry climates.
Each of our thatching have been carefully woven and will have subtle differences from the one displayed in the photograph.
This is great for that tropical theme, Tiki Theme or just to easily change the look of a room. Palm thatch is hand woven in Mexico from fronds by men and women. These people live in remote villages and also weave hats, baskets and mats. Palms are an important resource in the mexican economy. Buying Mexican Raincape instead of the poorly made foreign thatch helps supports the villages and our neighboring country, Mexico.
Origin: A Thatch Roof is a roof where people weave or tie a reed, grass, leaf, or straw material (In the United States this Material is Palm Leaves). It's traditional origins as a craft and style for buildings is England. From Castles to Churches to cheap protection for the poor. It's use also evolved along the tropical climate Islands, where it was necessary to weave or tie vegetation that was available to make a roof. As technology evolved Thatch became less necessary, building materials for roofing became easily available (Slate, Asphalt, Wood, Cement Rubber). Technology also created machinery that would make long stem straw not harvestable, therefore a new generation of short stem varieties were made that could not be woven into thatch. Thatch Roofs have become a style that property owners today realize, increases property values. For the United States, palms are everywhere in Mexico and this is the Origin of 80% of the U.S. thatch. From every Rubio's to every Palapa and Roof, it is called Mexican Rain cape thatch and is from the Middle of Mexico. Mexican Rain cape is more flexible and stronger woven than other thatches, such as Philippines, Elephant or African. Because it is made of decaying elements, thatch decays after about 3 years and must be replaced. It's other downside is it's flammability. Thatch will not burn easily (lighting it with a cigarette is almost impossible), however once a part of it ignites it is dangerous (Recommend calling your local fire department to get up to code).
How It’s Made: The palm is grown in the warm climate areas of Mexico (Mixteca Alta, Yucatán Peninsula). The leaves are harvested throughout the year depending on the demand. The leaves (fronds) are stored in a moist area a rotated for a week. It is then cooked or dried until it becomes a tan color. At this point it is ready to weave. The majority of weavers in Mexico are women. The weave is called the bow tie. The areas where these steps occur are very primitive (villages), and some weavers and harvesters speak an Indian dialect used by only a few thousand people. Calling or purchasing thatch from the source is completely different than what capitalist buyers are used to. The demand is so great that the person who controls the weavers and the operation does not need any more business., making the thatch market a monopoly controlled only by about 5 main buyers. If you ever have to cut thatch, remember not to cut the leaves or the bow ties. Cut in a zig zag fashion that is straight across.
How does it come and how much does it cost: The most popular thatch umbrellas, which can be purchased in 7 ft to 14 ft $100 to $300). Umbrellas are easy and fast, you always need two layers and it is a good idea to go to home depot and fasten the umbrella to the structure with wire, or you can buy a palapa kit that comes with the umbrellas ($700 to $1,500). The second way to do it is to measure your square footage for your roof and buy rolls. Thatch Rolls come in 30” x 60’ lengths and can easily be stapled and layered ($145 to $289) . The third is 4 x 4 panels, this works good for small projects (About $25 each).
