Thatch Roofs have become a style that property owners today realize, increases property values. For the United States, palms are everywhere in Mexico and this is the Origin of 80% of the U.S. thatch. From every Rubio's to every Palapa and Roof, it is called Mexican Rain cape thatch and is from the Middle of Mexico. Mexican Rain cape is more flexible and stronger woven than other thatches, such as Philippines, Elephant or African. Because it is made of decaying elements, thatch decays after about 3 years and must be replaced. It's other downside is it's flammability. Thatch will not burn easily (lighting it with a cigarette is almost impossible), however once a part of it ignites it is dangerous (Recommend calling your local fire department to get up to code).
• How It’s Made: The palm is grown in the warm climate areas of Mexico (Mixteca Alta, Yucatán Peninsula). The leaves are harvested throughout the year depending on the demand. The leaves (fronds) are stored in a moist area a rotated for a week. It is then cooked or dried until it becomes a tan color. At this point it is ready to weave. The majority of weavers in Mexico are women. The weave is called the bow tie. The areas where these steps occur are very primitive (villages), and some weavers and harvesters speak an Indian dialect used by only a few thousand people. Calling or purchasing thatch from the source is completely different than what capitalist buyers are used to. The demand is so great that the person who controls the weavers and the operation does not need any more business., making the thatch market a monopoly controlled only by about 5 main buyers. If you ever have to cut thatch, remember not to cut the leaves or the bow ties. Cut in a zig zag fashion that is straight across.
