About Chris Conaway

Chris Conaway: An Artist’s
Escape Offers Inspiration
-Brett Ashley
The tiki is a
symbol of ultimate relaxation. It represents a sense of carefree bliss
that
accompanies friends and a pool-side. For
“Mainlanders’” newest featured artist,
Chris Conaway, art has always been his muse and the tiki -- both his
hectic
schedule and escape. Despite the demanding time and talent that he
commits to
his work, he best describes his art as “his
salvation”.
In a recent
interview, Chris remarked, “the true magic of being alive,
for me, lies in the
celebration of one’s own imagination.”
Chris’s creative imagination is evident
in each of his pieces however he has also been able to rely on his many
travels
and also individuals for inspiration. Some of his many travels include;
Puerto
Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico, and all
over
the United States. Similarly, a great many individuals have influenced
his art.
Some of these individuals are legendary such as surf and lettering
artist, Rick
Griffin and authors Peter Townshed and Jack Kerovac while others are
less
renowned however equally important, such as, his mother and many
memorable
teachers.
As
for Chris Conaway’s most recent art, he has devoted
himself mainly to what he calls “unconventional tiki
visuals”. Some of these
prestigious projects include; a giant 4x8 foot mixed media piece that
explores
the historical evolution of Hawaii, and even a custom painted antique
suitcase.
The intent Chris Conaway says behind is art is to “provoke a
reaction”. He
believes that “on some fundamental level, we are all built
the same, and
possess the ability to respond to beauty and meaning contained in
art”. It is
this philosophy that separates Chris from the tedium of his work and
brings the
inspiration of the tiki alive for each of his fans.
